Wow, I had to go and make the ugliest possible thing for my very first Iron Chef challenge. Using the apple and ginger main ingredients I was terribly uncreative (I thought I was being safe for the first go) and even had a recipe to follow. I chose to make Ginger Apple Turnovers from Hollyhock Cooks I was kinda creative and subbed plums for the bananas that the recipe called for. Imagine this: Fresh, local apples and plums, with ginger, lemon juice, cinnamon, cardamom, and nutmeg all wrapped up in a light phylo pastry. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Too bad she’s not photogenic…

If I had them on hand I would have plated this with a nice big scoop of vanilla ice cream and a sprig of mint. Oh well, at least they were damn tasty. Next time I’ll just have to throw caution to the wind and try something completely out there… can’t turn out looking much worse than that (though at that, I will probably be eating my words).

Note: Leftover turnover filling is delicious with Fronch Toast and syrup.

It’s hard to make turnovers pretty….but yours look good to me! I’d love to have one.
